Anthracite is a unique type of coal distinguished by its high elemental coal content and exceptionally low levels of impurities. Its structure is characterized by low porosity and high hardness, making it an ideal filtration material.
Due to its physicochemical properties, anthracite is widely used in mechanical water and other liquids filtration across various industrial sectors. In multilayer filtration processes, it extends filter operation time while maintaining consistent water purification quality. The product is nearly completely inert - no material particles are released into the water that could lead to exceeding the threshold values for drinking water parameters.
Filtration process optimization: savings, efficiency, and sustainability
As water quality and operational efficiency requirements continue to rise, seeking innovative solutions in filtration processes is becoming increasingly essential. Our experience with filtration media, specifically the use of high-quality anthracite, demonstrates that optimizing filtration can lead to significant financial and operational benefits.
Significant water and energy savings
Implementing anthracite as part of the filtration bed delivers measurable benefits, primarily by significantly extending filtration cycles and reducing backwash frequency. Operational data shows that using anthracite with a grain size of 1.4–2.5 mm, in combination with filtration sand of 0.8–1.4 mm, in open gravity filters extended the average filtration time from 24–48 hours to 96–120 hours. That’s a threefold increase in filter run time between washings.
What are the tangible results?
Consider a system consisting of eight filters with a total filtration surface area of 232 m². Before anthracite was added, each filter required backwashing around 15 times per month, resulting in approximately 14,400 m³ of water consumption per month. After implementing anthracite, the average number of washes per filter dropped to around 7 times monthly.
This translates to water savings of approximately 8,000 m³ per month, or nearly 100,000 m³ annually - enough water to supply a sizeable population with drinking water for an entire week.
Lower resource consumption and longer equipment lifespan
It is important to note that the water used for backwashing is already treated—having undergone initial filtration, ozonation, and coagulation. Moreover, it often needs to be pumped over long distances and elevation differences. Reducing the amount of water used in this process directly lowers the electricity consumed by pumps and blowers and reduces the volume of coagulant needed. Less frequent operation of mechanical equipment also leads to extended service life and lower maintenance and replacement costs.
Improved water quality post-filtration
A dual-media filter bed consisting of sand and anthracite offers not only operational savings but also a marked improvement in water quality. After the first stage of filtration, the following results were observed:
These improvements reflect a much more efficient purification process, directly contributing to higher quality output—whether the water is destined for public distribution or environmental discharge.
A smart investment
